Summer Assignment-Their Eyes Were Watching God
ACE ParagraphIn the poem Huswifery, by Edward Taylor, the continuous use of textile metaphors helps to give the speaker a humble persona, displays his faith in God and highlights his wish to serve the Lord to the best of his ability. In line 7, Taylor states, "Then weave thyself. The yarn is fine." The yarn is referring to taking something rough, like sheep's wool, and turning it into a fine yarn. Taylor is comparing himself to the rough wool, while attributing God to being able to work make him into a desirable servant, which contributes to his humble personality shown. "Then clothe there- with mine understanding, will, affections, judgement, conscience, memory..." (Lines 13-14). Through these words, Taylor is conveying his will to gain virtuous character traits to aid in his ability to properly serve the Lord due to the Calvinistic beliefs of constant working on faith of the period.
